One police officer was killed and another was injured following a shooting in McKeesport on Monday. Police said they were alerted to a subject of a mental health crisis and warned he might be carrying a weapon.

“Officers tried to talk to the individual, but he walked away without talking to officers,” said Allegheny County Police Chief Christopher Kearns. Kearns said the man continued to leave Wilson toward the Grande Walking down View Avenue, the police encountered him in front of 1300 Grandview Avenue. “The suspect suddenly drew a handgun and shot two McKeesport officers,” Kearns said.

One of the officers was taken to UPMC McKeesport, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The second officer was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital. A Facebook post by the Washington County Police Department named the dead officer as Sean Sluganski and the injured officer as Chuck Thomas.

“The theme continued around the intersection of Versailles Avenue and Patterson Avenue, where he encountered a third McKeesport officer. He drew his gun again and shot the officer,” Kearns said. “There was an exchange of fire and the subject was injured.”

Both the injured officer and the suspect are in a stable condition, police said. Kearns said charges were being prepared against the suspect, who he said was known to McKeesport police.

“You’ve had contact with him before,” Kearns said. Sluganski’s team of other first responders traveled from UPMC McKeesport to the district physician’s office in Pittsburgh around 5:15 p.m.

All schools in the McKeesport School District are closed due to outside police activity. The ban was later lifted.
