Joao Cancelo records assist 17 minutes into Bayern Munich debut to leave Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes breathless

Joao Cancelo showed just why Bayern wanted to take him from Manchester City.

The defender signed for the Bundesliga club on loan for the rest of the season on deadline day and set up a goal in a Cup win.

Just a day after his arrival, the 28-year-old started the DFB-Pokal match against Mainz and he took just 17 minutes to contribute, assisting Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting for Bayern’s first goal in their 4-0 win.

After such a strong debut, his Portugal teammate Fernandes took to Instagram to share his congratulations.

The Manchester United man wrote ‘Jaaaaaa assim?’ on Cancelo’s post, which roughly translates to ‘You’re already doing this?

Despite being a huge success at City since his move in 2019, Cancelo’s loan to Bayern may not have come as a huge surprise.

The full-back fell out of favour with Pep Guardiola in recent weeks, and was an unused substitute in their previous three games.

Academy star Rico Lewis is now one of Guardiola’s first choices in the team, with the 18-year-old impressing for the side.

As a result, Cancelo has moved onto pastures new until the end of the season.

Whilst City chase Premier League leaders Arsenal, Cancelo joins a Bayern side who sit top of the Bundesliga.

He played 71 minutes on his debut for the German giants, who are now through to the quarter-finals of the cup.

Cancelo played a big role in such an achievement, and could do so once again throughout the rest of the campaign.
