A suburban woman was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Monday for dousing her sleeping boyfriend with boiling water. On Jan. 2, a video posted on Snapchat showed Alexis Sykes, 23, of Roselle, pouring boiling water on her boyfriend in the apartment they share.

After the incident, Sykes hid the victim’s car keys from him as the friend described watching his skin fall off his arms.

The friend finally got the keys and drove himself to a local hospital, where he was transferred to the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center shortly thereafter — where he spent nearly two weeks. Sykes disappeared after the incident and was arrested Jan. 19 in Okitbbeha County, Mississippi.

Her bond was set at $500,000 on Feb. 2. Sykes has since been held in the DuPage County Jail. On Monday morning, Sykes agreed to count the corrosive complex cells. She must serve 85 percent of her sentence before being granted parole.

An Illinois woman allegedly poured a jug of boiling water over her sleeping boyfriend and then posted the disturbing aftermath on social media, prosecutors said Tuesday. Alexis Sykes has been charged with brutal crimes at the home she shared with her boyfriend in Roselle, Illinois. Jan. 2, according to the DuPage County Attorney’s Office.

Sykes’ boyfriend was asleep on the couch when he scalded himself with boiling water. Instead of helping, Sykes videotaped the heinous act and posted it on Snapchat, prosecutors allege.

“I’m feeling kinda bad right now because he has 2nd and 3rd degree burns from his face to his waist and they threw him in the center of the burn but oh well (emoji shrugging) BH (emoji kissing) and crying all the time Let me drive him to the hospital,” she reportedly wrote in the video’s caption. The 22-year-old woman is also accused of hiding her boyfriend’s car keys when she saw his skin peel off her arm, prosecutors said.

The friend managed to get the keys, drove to Loyola University Medical Center, and was admitted to the burn unit, where he underwent skin grafting. The prosecutor’s office did not provide a motive for the incident. Sykes was arrested in Mississippi on Jan. 19 and extradited to Illinois, where he faces charges of aggravated assault with a corrosive substance and aggravated domestic violence.

“The allegations against Ms. Sykes are very disturbing,” said DuPage County Attorney Robert Berlin. “Dousing a sleeping man with boiling water, as alleged in this case, causing grievous, distressing injury, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
