Four Drugs That Can Cause Blindness If Taken Without Medical Supervision

We have access to medicines that can treat a wide range of medical conditions, including those that, if untreated, could be fatal. Many of these drugs, however, come with warnings and doctor’s orders that must be strictly adhered to in order to avoid side effects that could be far more serious than the illness itself. Some of these medical conditions may have as a side consequence impaired or complete loss of sight. Since our eyesight is so crucial to our entire health, we must be very careful when taking any prescription.

In order to lessen the possibility of unpleasant side effects, it is imperative that you get the advice of a qualified medical professional before taking any of these medications and that you follow all of your doctor’s recommendations precisely.

Here is a list of four drugs that have been connected to cases of blindness, as reported by webmd and healthline.

1. Hydroxychloroquine

This medication’s potential medical applications are so broad that it has been tested as a therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and a wide range of other inflammatory illnesses. However, it is well established that it can have detrimental effects on the retina and optical nerves, which can lead to blindness if not treated properly.

2. Isotretinoin

Formerly known as absorica, this ingredient is now commonly used to treat acne. There are a wide variety of negative consequences that can result from this drug’s misuse. Signs of possible blindness include dry eyes, sensitivity to bright light, and other symptoms.

3. Amiodarone

When a patient has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, this drug is prescribed to normalize the heart rate and rhythm. Amiodarone is a highly successful medicine for treating this disease, but it carries the potential for causing permanent damage to the optic nerve and blindness.

4. Flomax

Most patients who could benefit from this medicine would have benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, this medicine should be used with caution; no one should take it without a prescription or under the guidance of a medical practitioner.
