In the Kunene and Omusati regions of northern Namibia, the Ovahimba and Ovazimba tribes have preserved their magnificent culture without interference from the West.

With a population of over 50,000, women handle the daily labor-intensive jobs of caring for children, milking, and other household chores while men go hunting, often for extended periods of time. The quantity of cattle a person has determines how wealthy these nomads are. Himba females marry male partners chosen by their fathers after they reach puberty since they live in a polygamous society.

Their red skin is impossible to ignore. Otjize paste, which is a mixture of cream, omuzumba scrub, and ochre, is what gives them the red color on their skin. Its purpose is to shield their skin from the sun and insect bites. They also thought that red stood for “earth and blood.” The women had a smoke bath instead of a bath, after which they covered themselves in an aromatic resin.

Give credit where credit is due. This proverb has different meanings in this tribe. A man gives his visitor the Okujepisa Omukazendu treatment when he answers the door to show his approval and happiness at meeting him. The custom literally entails that the husband spends the night in another room while his wife is given over to his visitors. Her husband slept outside when there was no room available.

This passed-down custom has “benefits” for the neighborhood: it lessens jealously and promotes relationships. Women’s opinions on decision-making are quite rare. First and foremost, you must comply with the husband’s demands. Although she has the option to avoid sharing a bed with the visitor, she is nevertheless required to do so.

When her friends come to visit, she has the option of sending them to her husband, but this rarely occurs.
