Arsenal vs Crystal Palace

After being denied a reunion with their former Invincibles captain, Arsenal will host managerless Crystal Palace in a London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon. A victory for the Gunners would give them an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. Meanwhile, the Eagles sacked Patrick Vieira on Friday following a 12-game winless streak.

On Thursday evening, the Emirates Stadium witnessed a remarkable feat – one that could arguably be classified as the greatest goal ever scored in its history. Unfortunately for Arsenal, the goal, scored from an astounding 46 yards, proved to be a turning point that led to yet another bout of heartbreak in the Europa League.

While some optimistic Arsenal supporters saw their elimination from continental competition as a hidden blessing, manager Mikel Arteta did not share their sentiment. The Gunners, who have emerged as surprise contenders for the Premier League title, are now focusing all their efforts on thwarting Manchester City’s charge in the crucial final phase of the season.

Arsenal continued their winning run with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Fulham, their fifth consecutive Premier League triumph. They currently hold a five-point advantage over the reigning champions, which could increase to eight points with a win while City participates in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The team has been in an excellent scoring form, netting at least three goals in four of their last five Premier League fixtures. Arteta has urged his players to put their European disappointment behind them and bounce back strongly. Meanwhile, the recent sacking of a fellow London-based club may have a different kind of impact on the league.

On March 17, Crystal Palace fired Patrick Vieira, along with coaches Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson, and Said Aigoun, following a disastrous 12-game winless run in 2023. The decision was met with a flurry of St. Patrick’s Day witticisms.

The team’s woes were compounded by a 1-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, which featured a Solly March goal. However, the match did provide a silver lining for Palace, as they finally managed to break their three-game streak of failing to land a shot on target in the Premier League. The defeat proved to be the final straw for the 46-year-old Frenchman, as he was relieved of his duties as manager.
